August did not look at himself as a farmer. At 16 years of age he began running a threshing rig and stayed with the occupation for 48 years, using his favorite form of power, the steam engine. He also sawed lumber, ran a ditching machine with horsepower and was a buttermaker at a Creamery located between Frost and Elmore in 1904. August was short in stature and bald at a very young age.
