76The following is from The Fernald/Furnald Genealogy Page,
http://members.aol.com/Drumn8/RFernald.html. Renald or Reginald Fernald came to Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1631, as the surgeon of Capt. John Mason's Company. It is tradition that he was a surgeon in the English Navy, resigning his post to come to America. During his life, he served as Clerk of Court, Recorder of Deeds, Commissioner and Surveyor, and was Town Clerk at the time of his death. He lived on "Doctor's Island" (now Pierce's Island) where he died between May 17 and Oct 7, 1656. He is buried at Point of Graves Cemetery in Portsmouth.
83 Most of the Fernald descendants remained in the area, residing in Kittery, Maine throughout their lives. Others moved to nearby New England towns. (The name was sometimes spelled Furnald, depending on who wrote it down.)
