Page 949, Early collector of the ports of Portsmouth and Boston, who was absent in England when the stamp act of 1765 was passed, and was appointed agent for distributing the stamps in New Hampshire. Three days after his arrival in Boston he was burned in effigy. On his landing he was surrounded by a menacing crowd, and to pacify them he publicly resigned his office on the parade. The people of Portsmouth, hearing of his arrival, hung him in effigy at the hay market, where his figure was allowed to remain through the day; that night it was carried through the town under great excitement and burned. When he reached Portsmouth he was instantly compelled to resign his office in presences of the indignant populace. He was an ardent Royalist and went back to England before hostilities commenced. His property was confiscated during the Revolution.58
