With 25 others hanged as a pirate in Newport. A Marblehead fishing vessel had been taken by prates and some of the crew were among those hanged. Joseph protested that he was forced but some of the witnesses testified they saw him “fire”. The narrative of his more fortunate cousin, Philip Ashton, printed many years later, tells how Joseph helped him from drowning.76
