Notes for Benjamin RIDEOUT
Capt. Benjamin Rideout came to california in 1850 via the isthmus of Panama. He stayed with his brother Norman Dunning Rideout in Sacramento. Norman came to California in 1849 by wagon train via Donner Pass. The two started a store in Camptonville (mother lode country and handled gold dust, etc., for the miners)
After 7 years, Benjamin returned to Old town, ME. There he married Ann M. Brown (my GG Grandmother) She was a widoe and mother of two children at that time. She and my GG Grandfather had three children.
At East Port, Maine my GG Grandfather a boat and sailed up the Bay of Fundy and at high tide went up the St johns River to Fredericton. There he purchased 2 more boats and estblished a tourist route from Fredericton to Grand Falls. Ann and family would join him from Old Town during the summer and during the winter would he would return to Old Town.
After Ann Died when my G grandfather was about 3 years old - GG Grandfather Benjamin met Eliza Mayes in Fredericton and they were married 1864 in Christ Cathedral.
About that time the railroads came and GG Grandfather decided to return to california about 1875. My G Grandfather Eugene Parker, did not come with them but came via rail when he was 16 years old about 1876.
GG Grandfather first went to Sacremento, then to San Francisco to stay with his wifeís relatives (Adams related to the President). From San Francisco to Berkeley were Jack was going to College (UC)
Their home was a large apartment complex called Rideout Apts. My Step GG Grandmother lived to be 92; Her daughter Ann to 95 and Sybil (annís daughter in 1977 was 82, I believe she has passed on)
