John E. “Jack” Horner 1927-1999, 71, of Cloquet, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in his home. He was born on July 5, 1927, in McGregor to Ira and Hazel (Day) Horner. He was raised in the McGregor area and attended McGregor schools. He moved to Cloquet in 1945 and was employed by the Conwed Corporation for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He married Alice Whitebird on Oct. 30, 1971, in Cloquet. He was a member of the former Bethel Lutheran Church in Atkinson. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, and also fishing, hunting and playing the harmonica. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Walter, Charles, Floyd, Harold and Jim; and sisters, Louise McGee and Lillian Demenge. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by his wife, Alice of Cloquet; a son, Norman of Fairbanks, Ala.; three daughters, Lola (Paul) Davidson of Moose Lake, Pamela (Mike) Ekholm and Julie (Jim) Johanson, both of Cloquet; a stepson, Tom (Cindy) Whitebird of Cloquet; a daughter-in-law, Mary Horner of Mahtowa; four sisters, Mildred Hansel of Albert Lea, Bessie Murphy of Cloquet, Lila Erickson of Crosby and Edna (Cliff) Hanson of Deer River; four brothers, Robert (Marge) Horner of Crosby, Marvin Horner of Coon Rapids, Melvin (Peg) Davidson of Grants Pass, Ore., and Kenneth (Ann) Sogard of Balsam Lake, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Bret Horner, Shelia (Curtis) Miller, Dan Davidson, Yvonne (Keith) Skelton, Jessica and Carmen Ekholm, and Jeffrey, Jenna and Jodi Johanson; four step-grandchildren, Mathew and Joshua Whitebird, Erica Lanes and Derek Wehr; one great-grandchild, Rhavin; six step-great-grandchildren, Taylor, Saydee, Trentin, Dustin, Carrisa and Beau; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet. Interment will follow in Pine River Cemetery in Brevator Township.
