Notes for Newton Stone FULLER
Newton Stone Fuller, son of Leonard F. and Mary I. (Hunt) Fuller, wasborn February 9, 1860, in Providence, R. I. His preparation for collegewas made in the High School of his native city, and he graduated fromBrown University in 1882. He taught in Colby Academy, at New London, N.H., for a year after his graduation, and in a private academy atPoughkeepsie, N. Y., during the second year. In 1884 he was electedProfessor of Latin in Ripon College, which position he occupied for tenyears, resigning it in 1894 on account of his health which had been suchas to require his absence in Colorado during the preceding year. He diedof consumption at Colorado Springs, May 8, 1895. He married, June 29,1886, Miss Harriet Peirce who, with their two daughters, survives him.
Professor Fuller's first years in Wisconsin were so fully occupied bythe immediate duties of the position to which he had been called at anearly age that he had little opportunity for other work; so that, although he had previously attended one or more meetings of the Academy,he became a member only two years before his failing health forbadefurther efforts; and therefore the fidelity which was the markedcharacteristic of his life was little known beyond the narrow circle ofhis intimate associates, who have placed on record their testimony that"as a man of scholarship, strong character, cultivated tastes, skill ininstruction, gentleness combined with firmness, and steadfast devotion toduty, he made himself a place of usefulness and effective service rarelysurpassed."761
