Notes for Thomas SPENCER
Deposition in August 1676, that he had lived in this country for 46 years; “Old father Spencer . . . was sent over as a servant by Captain John Mason” (Samuel Allen v. Humphrey S., 1704). He probably came from Winchcombe, County, Gloucester, the home of the Chadbournes, where one Thomas Spencer bought a message in 1624. Sued for debt by William Scadlock in Saco court 7 February 1636-7, Mr. John Treworgye bondsman. In 1647 he and Thomas Withers were called on to account for rates and fines collected. Disenfranchised 1659 for entertaining Quakers. In 1661 he and Daniel Goodwin were accused of trading with Indians, but no ground appeared. In 1662 Barefoot got a judgment against him for debt, which was discharged in 1663 by Humphery Chadbourne in behalf of the son William. Coroner’s Jury 1647; Grand jury 1651, 1653, 1656; jury 1653; Tavern license 1659, 1680. Wife Patience Chadbourne. Both absent from meeting 1663, 1675, he in 1665, Will 5 June 1679 - 1 May 1682. Widow Patience was licensed in 1682 (son Moses Bondsman). Divided to 3 sons and 2 son-in-laws (Joy, Chick); Daniel Goodwin was given 10 shillings as a token of remembrance.76
