481The Rev. Peter Hobart, first minister at Hingham, Mass, was the son of Edmund and Margaret Dewey. He was baptized Oct 13, 1604 at Hingham, Norfolk, where the family name was usually written "Hubbert" or "Hubbard". In preparation for the ministry, to which he consecrated in early life, he was sent to Magdalen College, Cambridge, where he received a degree of BA in 1625/26, followed by a MA in 1629. He served the churches at Southwold and Haverhill, both in Suffolk County, England, and perhaps, other churches, before arriving from England with his wife and four children on 08 Jun 1635 bringing with him his followers. He founded the "Old Hingham Church of Puritan Faith". The Hingham Meeting House was a log structure raised by the Rev Peter and a "little band of 33" in 1635. The Old Ship Church was constructed in 1681 with timbers from the old church - this church was till in use in 1993. Peter died in Hungham, Mass, 20 Jan 1678/79, having been in a feeble condition for some time. . Peter was a Minister in Hingham, Mass, for 44 years and history shows that he kept a careful diary of baptisms and other church events during that time. On the first page of this diary, which recorded baptisms, marriages, and death, which came under his notice during his nearly 44 years in our Hingham, is the following: "I with my wife and four children came safely to New England ye 8: 1635: for everprayse be the god of Heaven my god and king." In Sept. following he settled in our Hingham, and on the 18th of that month recieved a grant of a house-lot on Town (North) St. He also had other grants of land for planting purposes. Peter's brother, John, may have been his twin. The identity and "sequence" of Peter's two wives has been the subjext of much speculation, however, Torrey is quite convincing in his deductions which state that they were Elizabeth Ibrook and Rebecca Peck, in that order. Peter left a will, in which his fifteen children then living are mentioned. Five of Peter's sons were educated at Harvard College, of which four became Ministers of the gospel. The date of his death, and the years of his ministry are recorded on a memorial tablet, standing near Central Ave., in the Hingham cemetery as follows:
IN MEMORY OF
REV. PETER HOBART WHO DIED JANUARY
20th 1679 IN THE 75th YEAR OF HIS
AGE AND 53d OF HIS MINISTRY 9 YEARS
OF WHICH HE SPENT IN HINGHAM
GREAT BRITIAN & 44 IN HINGHAM
MASSACHUSETTS
A second memorial is on the corner of North and Ship Streets, marking the 1635 landing place of Peter and his followers; it reads as follows:
IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF
REVEREND PETER HOBART
AND
THAT COMPANY OF ENGLISH MEN AND WOMEN
WHO FOUNDED THE TOWN OF
HINGHAM
LANDING NEAR THIS SPOT IN SEPTEMBER
1635
ERECTED BY OLD COLONY CHAPTER
DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
1913
This journal was begun by Rev. Peter Hobart. While there are 2 entries in 1635, the journal begins in earnest in 1637.
It is believed that Dea. David Hobart copied his father's original journal and then continued with his own entries. What happened to Peter's original journal is not known.
The excerpts that follow are those notations made pertaining to the Hobart family. None of the spelling, punctuation, etc. has been changed or corrected, although I have taken the liberty of "double dating."

By 1807 the journal had passed into the hands of Capt. Noah Hobart of Salem, by 1846 it was in the possession of Mr. David Andrews of Hingham, and in 1912 it was presented to the Massachussetts Historical Society by Mrs. Francis Henry Lincoln.
Excerts obtained from family group record -1 pg3 by James F. Culbertson P.O. Box 207 Ojai, CA93023 phone 805-646-1716 dtd 1-12-1988
01. Peter Hobart, Twin of Edmund the younger, was born in Higham, Norfolk Co., England, on the 26 Jan 1602 and died in hingham, MA, 20 Jan 1679.
02. He Graduated at Magdalen Collage, Cambridge University, England, in 1625, as Master of Arts, and taught there for a short period, and was ordained as a Minister of the Church of England, by the Bishop of Norwich in 1627.
03. He preached in England for ten years, and left Haverhill, England, in April 1635, with his wife and four children. He joined the Church in Charleston 30 June 1635.
04.The First entry in his journal reads as follows: “1635 June 8th, I with my wife and four children came safely to New England, June 8th 1635. Forever praised by God in Haven, My God and My King.” On Sept 2nd, 1635, Peter Hobart was made a “freeman,” and sep 18th, 1635, he with twenty others founded Higham,MA. Formally drawing their house lots an that day. From 1635 to 1679 he preached in Higham, according to the memorial tablet now in the church.
05. Peter was an independant and spririted clergyman, and somewhat contentious withal. According to the chronical of those times he was (a) deal of a Jacobite, and espoused the cause of the House of Stewuart. In this he ran counter to the political ideas of the Governor and colonial legislature.
In the words of the Historical: “ He espoused too wormly his late Sovereign’s cause and English customs generally, which occasidnally brought him up before the General Court to answear for his out spoken opinions. In 1646 He was fined twenty pounds for seditious practices and derogation, and contempt for authority, and was bound (paroled) to his good behavior.”
06. The late Sovereign here alluded to was Charles 1, who lost his head through a slight misunderstanding with Cromwell and the Long Parliament. So Peter being a staunch Royalist instead of a roundhead, and having the courage of his convictions, ran counter to the prejudices of the sympathizers with Parliament, who we in the majority in the colony, and suffered the penalty for a too intemperate expression of his loalty.
One cannot but admire his courage, though he might disparage his discretion. In fact all of the Hobarts of those days seemed to have a knack for getting into trouble. Peter defended his brothers Joshua, Edmund the Younger and thomas against charges of insubordination perferred by Lt. Antony Eames, “Commanding Officer of the Train Band,” and a member of his own church.
This was a bitter and disagreeable quarrel and agitated Hingham for many years, and resulted in finding of all of the participants in the sum of 125 pounds, to which the Hobart family contributed 27 pounds.
